  18. Font sources are stored in a directory hierarchy, and this hierarchy
  19. is small enough to be searched recursively without serious delays.  PK
  20. and TFM files are stored in flat directories: one directory for the
  21. TFM files and one for each device type.  (This makes it easy to clean
  22. up, i.e., remove some of the weird resolutions that users generate ;-)

  24. TeX input files are also stored in a directory hierarchy.  This is,
  25. however, so big that it takes very long time to start TeX.  Some users
  26. complain, some users make their own custom format files containing
  27. what they need, and yet other users make their private copies of the
  28. files they need and eliminate the system path from TEXINPUTS.
